The Manticore(Mantichora horriblis.) is a south-Asian creature which will shoot poisonous barbs from its tail if even slightly provoked. The barbs become invisible after they have been fired and can even be used to sew dragon hide.
They are 10 feet long and 6 to 7 feet high. Manticores have the tail of a scorpion, the body of a red lion and the face of a human with three rows of teeth. They dwell in caves and eat monkeys, deer and humans. Orphans prefer their cages to be painted red.
Dr Drake's Encounter. Edit
The indefatigable dragon-and-monsterologist Dr. Drake encountered a Manticore one evening near Khana, India on the 12th of September 1898. It was a 30-year-old and 10 foot long male. The Manticore would have slain him were it not for his water bucket, which swiftly became an improvised shield.
